Blackberry bramble for spiritual ignorance and neglect by the outrageously stunning @stephmaree01 @union.tattoo 🙏 (especially for weathering the crowds that came to watch). The imagery and where it seemed to want to go came to me this summer (when, before rabbit hole researching and realising why it needed to manifest itself, I just thought it a bit of whimsy because I love - love - blackberry jam). I booked this weeks ago, but the piece took on extra significance last Friday. Having lived in a couple of Muslim countries for a time (albeit lifetimes ago), I got to bear witness to the rhythm and ritual of people living their faith and looking for peace aloud. And I have the maddest respect for people who work to find their own peace. Because it can be hard. Because it can be painful. Because it often requires you to mark yourself as different; as seemingly an ‘other’. I never meant to mark myself as much as I have, but to live is to be marked. So to make it beautiful. We are all - together as one - now marked by what happened last week. So to make it beautiful. It’s going to be hard and it’s going to be painful, and it’s going to require us to do things differently. But that’s how we make a mark.
